The Wichita Fire Department held a ribbon cutting today at Fire Station 21 at 2110 North 135th Street West. The $2.3 million dollar facility is approximately 11,500 square feet. It offers an apparatus storage room and an emergency operations center/multipurpose room for community events and District Advisory Board meetings. The two-bay facility also includes an important “drive through” feature which prevents fire crews from blocking traffic when returning to the station.
“We are pleased to open the new fire station to firefighters and residents,” Wichita Fire Chief Ronald D. Blackwell said. “It will allow neighborhood firefighters an even closer and more productive relationship with those we so proudly serve.”
Workers broke ground on Fire Station 21 on April 11, 2008. Firefighters moved into the new station in late June. It is one of three new fire stations opening this year. Fire Station 20 (2255 S. Greenwich Road) opened in April. Fire Station 22 (2659 S. Hydraulic) will open in the near future.
