Mayor Carlos Mayans will attend the 72nd Annual Meeting the United States Conference of Mayors, June 25-29 in Boston, Mass. The Mayor Mayans will join mayors from across the nation in the discussion a variety of key issues and challenges affecting America’s cities including homeland security, jobs and the economy, faith-based strategies for ex-offenders, housing, transportation, public health, sales-lease back tax policy and education. Key policy resolutions on national priorities and the Iraq War, Canadian drug importation and gay marriages will be considered. During the conference, mayors will also release the third Homeland Security Monitoring Report tracking federal funds to local governments, a Jobs Report that analyzes employment wages in addition to evaluating the impact of job gains/losses on health and retirement benefits, as well as an Interoperability Report that measures communication between city agencies and emergency responders. Featured speakers at the conference will include Presidential Candidate Senator John Kerry and Mayor Nomaindia Mfeketo of Cape Town, South Africa. In addition, the mayors will participate in a Habitat for Humanity Build, entitled The Habitat House the Mayors Built, to call national attention to the need for affordable housing opportunities in the country’s urban centers.
