The "27th Annual National Night Out" (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 3, 2010.
Join The Party!
Wichita residents are once again invited to join thousands of other communities across America in supporting a unique, coast-to coast crime prevention project on August 3rd, 2010 to give neighborhood crime and drugs a "going away" party. From 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., residents city wide and across the nation, will be asked to turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside on their block.

For the last nineteen years, the Wichita Police Department has won national awards for its National Night Out program. In 2008 Wichita finished 5th in overall participation in the category of cities with 300,000+ population.

During National Night Out 2010 many neighborhoods will be hosting special activities such as yard parties, cookouts, etc. National Night Out gives people a chance to heighten crime prevention awareness, bring neighbors closer together, and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighbors across the U.S.A. are organized and fighting back. Organize a special activity for your neighborhood. Officers from the Wichita Police Department will stop by and visit as many events as possible. The police helicopter will fly over and "spotlight" blocks hosting activities, Let’s get involved and join others across the country in letting criminals know they are not welcome in our community. Start planning your parties now with your neighborhood. For more information contact Community Affairs 455 N. Main, Wichita KS, 67202, or call 268-4101.

Auto Theft Information Flier

Is someone about to steal your car?

Did you know that in the United States a vehicle is stolen every 25 seconds? If the business of

stealing automobiles were legalized and incorporated, it would rank in the top 250 among Fortune 500

companies.

New vehicles, older models—it doesn’t matter. Thieves look for cars and trucks that can be resold

quickly or stripped for parts; parts that often yield two and even three times the value of the vehicle.

The stolen vehicle could also be used in the commission of other serious crimes. That’s why it’s important for you to make it tough for car thieves to steal your vehicle. Remember, the more difficult your car or truck is to steal, and the more time a thief must spend stealing it, the greater the chance for detection, and the more likely he’ll move on to one that’s easier to steal.

Follow these 12 no cost precautions:

-Take your keys

Nearly 20% of all stolen vehicles had the keys in them.

-Park in well-lighted areas

Over half of all vehicle thefts occur at night.

-Lock your car

Approximately half of all stolen vehicles were left unlocked.

-Never hide a second set of keys in your car

Extra keys can easily be found if a thief takes time to look.

-Close car windows completely when parking

Don’t make it any easier for the thief to enter your vehicle.

-If you have a garage, use it

If you have a garage, take time to use it rather than

parking outside where your vehicle is more vulnerable.

-Don’t leave valuables in plain view

Don’t make your car a more desirable target and attract

thieves by leaving valuables in plain sight.

-When parking in a garage, lock the garage door and your vehicle

By locking both the garage and vehicle doors, the chances of deterring a thief greatly improve.

-Never leave your car running, even if you’ll only be gone for a minute

Vehicles are commonly stolen at convenience stores, gas stations, ATMs, etc. Many vehicles are also stolen on cold mornings when owners leave them running to warm up.

-Don’t leave the vehicle title in your car

A car thief will use these to sell your stolen car. File the

title at your home or office.

-Replace "T" shape door locks with straight locks

Some vehicle doors have lock assemblies at window level that flare out in a knob or "T" shape. A thief can use

various tools to gain access inside the vehicle, grab and

pull the lock. Straight locks prevent this

-Disable your vehicle when leaving it unattended for an extended period

Remove the electronic ignition fuse, coil wire, rotor distributor, or otherwise disable your vehicle anytime thieves may have extended access to it.

If you see any suspicious activities please call 911.

The Wichita Police Department is asking for your cooperation in reducing auto theft. If you have any questions, please feel free to call me, Officer R. Baker #C1606 at 350-3460 or Email me at rbaker@wichita.gov.

The mission of the Wichita Police Department is to provide professional and ethical public safety services in partnerships with citizens to identify, prevent and solve the problems of crime, fear of crime, social disorder and neighborhood decay, thereby improving the quality of life in our community.

The above sign is available from the Wichita Police Departments Community Affairs Section for purchase for $21.76.  This sign is the same size as a vehicle license plate turned sideways and is perfect for businesses that have patrons and customers that need that little extra reminder to not leave items visible in their vehicles, not leave their keys in their cars, and to lock their cars.  If you are interested please call the number listed below.

Organizing Neighborhood Watch

Block by block community mobilization is the most powerful weapon in the war on drugs. A neighborhood watch is the fastest, safest, and most effective way to rid your neighborhood of a drug house and prevent it from coming back. Why? Your neighbors and you coming together gives you power and power gives you results to take back your neighborhood block.
