The "27th Annual National Night Out" (NNO), a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW), has been scheduled for Tuesday, August 3, 2010.

Join The Party!
Wichita residents are once again invited to join thousands of other communities across America in supporting a unique, coast-to coast crime prevention project on August 3rd, 2010 to give neighborhood crime and drugs a "going away" party. From 6:00 to 10:00 p.m., residents city wide and across the nation, will be asked to turn on outside lights and spend the evening outside on their block.

For the last nineteen years, the Wichita Police Department has won national awards for its National Night Out program. In 2008 Wichita finished 5th in overall participation in the category of cities with 300,000+ population.

During National Night Out 2010 many neighborhoods will be hosting special activities such as yard parties, cookouts, etc. National Night Out gives people a chance to heighten crime prevention awareness, bring neighbors closer together, and send a message to criminals letting them know that neighbors across the U.S.A. are organized and fighting back. Organize a special activity for your neighborhood. Officers from the Wichita Police Department will stop by and visit as many events as possible. The police helicopter will fly over and "spotlight" blocks hosting activities, Let’s get involved and join others across the country in letting criminals know they are not welcome in our community. Start planning your parties now with your neighborhood. For more information contact Community Affairs 455 N. Main, Wichita KS, 67202, or call 268-4101.

12 Beat Crime Trends

During the month of June there were a total of 5 incidents of non-residence burglary in the area.  Four of the incidents were all north of second street and a few blocks west of Seneca.  The losses included lawnmowers, electronics, weedeaters, and a bicycle.  Half of the incidents were from unlocked sheds or detached garages.  One of the easiest ways to keep your property safe is to lock it up.  Many times thefts of this sort are crimes of opportunity.  Make sure you write down model numbers and serial numbers of lawnmowers, weedeaters, and any property in your garage or house in case property stolen from you turns up in a pawn shop.  This way you can get your property back and someone can be charged with a crime.

                           Paint Grant Program

The City of Wichita’s Neighborhood Improvement Services is accepting applications for its Paint Grant Program. The Paint Grant Program is a seasonal program that runs from April 1 to Sept. 15 of each year. The program provides up to $200 worth of exterior paint to qualified property owners of residential structures located within the Redevelopment Incentive Area (RIA).

The RIA is bounded by I-235 on the west, Pawnee on the south, 25th Street on the north, Hillside on the east and the Local Investment Area (LIA) that extends beyond the RIA boundaries.  All of Delano is covered in this program.

To qualify for the free paint, the applicant must be the owner of a residential structure located within the RIA or the LIA Area with household income that does not exceed eighty (80%) percent of the median incomeguidelines for the applicable family size as established by HUD.

To apply or receive more information, call Neighborhood Improvement Services at 462-3713.

 DRUG HOUSES IN YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD

We are working on several drug complaints on the beat. Sometimes these complaints take time to investigate. I want to assure we will work each drug complaint we receive from you and try to take the appropriate action necessary to reduce or resolve the complaint.

If you know of a drug house or a possible drug house,

please contact me with as much information as you can about the location.

You can remain anonymous!

I would like to address three questions that I am often asked by citizens on the phone or at a neighborhood association meeting regarding possible drug houses in their respective neighborhood:
How do I know whether a drug house is active in my neighborhood?
Drug House Danger Signs
Increased short-term auto and pedestrian visits at unusual times during the day and night to a particular house or apartment.
Increase in litter such as used syringes, plastic bag, glass pipes, bottles, trash, stacks of used matches, and graffiti.
Increase in crimes like auto burglaries, home burglaries, robbery, vandalism, and assault.
Increase in noise such as loud voices, parties, fights, gunfire, and loud radios especially at night.
Active prostitution in or around the neighborhood.
Residences with blacked out windows.
Unusual, strong odors (like cat urine, ether, ammonia, acetone or other chemicals)
What kind of information would the Wichita Police Department like about a drug house in my neighborhood?
Drug sellers: (specific description) Name, race, sex, age, height and weight, hair, build and complexion, dress, scars, marks, or tattoos, and distinct features (limp, piercings, beard etc.).

How do we get rid of a drug house?
Contacting SCAT (Special Community Action Team)
The Wichita Police Department recognizes that we cannot win the war against gangs and drugs alone. Gangs and drugs affect all of us and often destroy our community and families. We need your help, DO NOT look the other way and say it's not my problem. We need the community to get involved to be our extra eyes and ears. Get involved!
Please report drug and gang activity in your neighborhood to the Special Community Action Team (SCAT). SCAT is the enforcement arm of community policing, which primarily specializes, in street level drug and gang activity.
Any information received by you will be kept confidential and you will be doing your community a service. YOU can make a difference by calling the Patrol West Bureau S.C.A.T Team at 350-3460 or 267-SCAT.
Organizing Neighborhood Watch
Block by block community mobilization is the most powerful weapon in the war on drugs. A neighborhood watch is the fastest, safest, and most effective way to rid your neighborhood of a drug house and prevent it from coming back. Why? Your neighbors and you coming together gives you power and power gives you results to take back your neighborhood block. For information on starting a neighborhood watch you can call me at (316) 350-3460 or email me at wperkins@wichita.gov.
