Fire Hydrant Permits

To prevent unrestricted use of public fire hydrants, a permit procedure is maintained, with fees calculated to equitably recover costs associated with controlled use of hydrants. These policies and procedures apply to all users, except fire departments. Permits are not transferable, and sub-contractors cannot use permits issued to general contractors.

The hydrant permit billing system sends a monthly notice for charges of hydrant permits. When the meter is returned to the water meter shop at 1825 S McLean Blvd, charges will be calculated at $2.99 per 1000 gallons and a final bill sent.

Users of public fire hydrants must contact the Wichita Water Utilities' Meter Repair Shop located at 1825 S McLean Blvd for a permit and state the hydrant location to be used and reason for use.

Fees for individual hydrant permits are as follows:

  • 30 day permit for 3/4" meter is $100.00 per month plus water usage @ $2.99 per 1000 gallons

  • 30 day permit for 3" meter is $200.00 per month plus water usage @ $2.99 per 1000 gallons

A general permit is available which authorizes the use of all public hydrants. The user must notify Wichita Water Utilities dispatch at (316) 262-6000 of the location and date of use at least two workdays prior to the use of particular hydrant. A general permit will cost the user $300 for each month plus water usage @ $2.99 per 1000 gallons. A permit is required for each meter or valve being used by a company or companies. Companies with more than one vehicle may purchase a general permit for $300 for the first truck and $50.00 per month for each additional truck plus water usage.

The cost of a 10-day permit for a 3" meter is available for $100. Failure to return the meter on the 10th day will result in additional charges of $100 per 10 days until meter is returned.  All permit holders using the hydrant will need to carry a permit document.

Meters checked out for longer than six months should be returned to the Wichita Water Utilities' Meter Shop for a reading so that water usage can be billed.

Applicants with unpaid charges will not receive permits. An advance deposit, to cover the cost of the equipment issued and anticipated water consumption, will be required of users who have damaged hydrants, damaged or lost meters or tools, who have been 90 days delinquent on charges related to previous permits, or who are officed outside the service area. Damages to meters and lost tools will result in charges to cover to the cost of damage. Minimum deposit for 3/4" meter is $300.00. Minimum deposit for 3" meter is $700.00. Deposits must be paid by check or money order made out to Wichita Water Utilities.

It is unlawful for any person to use water from any part of the waterworks system of the City without proper permit or other authority from the Wichita Water Utilities. Failure of any users to abide by the permit procedure will be construed as unlawful and the proper authorities will be notified. Violators will be assessed a fee of $500 for improper use of water from a fire hydrant plus any damages that may have occurred. Continued, habitual abuse will result in criminal charges being filed.

We appreciate your cooperation and patience. If you have any questions, please contact Teresa Crosby at 268-4625.
