Janet Miller, City Council District VI

A lifelong Kansan and 22-year resident of District 6, Janet Miller was elected to the City Council in April 2009. Until being elected, she was involved in community activities full time as a volunteer, serving on the board of Historic Midtown Citizens Association (HMCA), the District 6 Advisory Board, and as president of the Wichita Board of Park Commissioners. She is an ardent advocate for the 21st Street Revitalization Initiative, safe neighborhoods, and a robust downtown.

Janet has played significant roles in developing the Wichita/Sedgwick County Plan to End Chronic Homelessness; creating the strategic master plan for Wichita’s Parks, Recreation, and Open Spaces; updating the Wichita/Sedgwick County Cultural Arts Plan; and launching Botanica’s capital campaign for its new children’s garden.

In recent years she has been involved in the CORE Neighborhood Revitalization project, Visioneering’s Regional Recreation Alliance, the creation of a new non-profit to rehabilitate affordable housing, and she helped community non-profits raise more than $100,000. A decade ago, Janet served on the Downtown Wichita Association board and helped launch what became the funding source for today’s successful Wichita Downtown Development Corporation (WDDC).

A graduate of Kansas State University, Janet began her career as a middle school teacher and places a high value on continuing education, including her own. Janet completed Wichita Citizens Academy to deepen her knowledge of local government and has taken language classes at Wichita State University to help her communicate with the growing number of Spanish-speaking residents and business owners in District 6.

Janet and her husband of 18 years, Nile Dillmore, live in a 1920s bungalow in Historic Midtown. Known as “Aunt Jan” to six nieces and a nephew, Janet cherishes her role as favorite aunt and mentor.
