Earth Day is celebrated annually around the globe. Some 20 million Americans first celebrated Earth Day on April 22, 1970, when cities were buried under smog and polluted rivers caught fire.
Through the combined efforts of the U.S. government, local governments, grassroots organizations and citizens, a day of national environmental recognition has evolved into a worldwide campaign to protect the global environment.
