Rock Road Traffic Switch
On Tuesday, July 1, 2008, Rock Road traffic will be switched onto the new partially-completed bridge over the Kellogg freeway. There will be two lanes of traffic for both northbound and southbound traffic (four lanes total). When the Rock Road bridge is completed it will carry 12 lanes of traffic over Kellogg.
The traffic switch will be in two stages. The first will be just after 7 a.m. and the second will be mid-day. If it rains on Tuesday the switch will be postponed to Wednesday.
Left turns at Rock Road and Kellogg will continue to be prohibited. Kellogg traffic needing to ‘turn left’ will use the turn-arounds at Eastern and west of Armour.
Construction on the Kellogg and Rock Road interchange began in February 2007. The project consists of freeway and frontage road reconstruction from Governeour to east of Rock Road.
The first phase of work was construction of the north frontage road and reconstruction of Rock Road. The second phase was construction of the south frontage road, South Armour and the east half of the Rock Road bridge over Kellogg. The current, third phase of the project will be the west half of the Rock Road bridge over Kellogg and the mainline roadway including a bridge over Armour.
The Kellogg freeway at Rock Road will pass over Armour and under Rock Road. It is expected to be complete in the spring of 2010. With the improvements, there will be no traffic signals for 13 miles through Wichita -- from 111th Street West to Cypress, near the Kansas turnpike.
About 70,000 motorists travel daily through the Kellogg/Rock Road intersection. There are 250 businesses in close proximity to the construction and access is being maintained to all of them during construction.
