The City of Wichita is hosting the official groundbreaking of Phase II of the Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) project today at 4 p.m. at a location near Bentley. Directions to the groundbreaking site are listed below. Scheduled speakers include U.S. Senator Sam Brownback and Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer.
Phase II is the largest phase of construction for the ASR project, which is ensuring Wichita will have a stable and reliable water supply through the year 2050 by taking excess water flow out of the Little Arkansas River, treating it to meet water-quality standards and pumping it underground into the Equus Beds aquifer for later use. It consists of five projects that have an anticipated 2012 completion date: Water Treatment Plant and Intake Structure; Pipelines; Recharge and Recovery Wells; Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Systems; and Overhead Power Lines.
The groundbreaking will take place on the future site of a Water Treatment Plant that use cutting-edge technology to remove even the smallest of contaminants from the river water before it is pumped into the aquifer.
That $400 million ASR project has a total of four phases that are scheduled to be completed by 2018.
