Mayor Carl Brewer and City Council Member Sue Schlapp are scheduled to participate in the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) Fill-The-Boot campaign at 10 a.m. on Monday at the traffic medians at 29th and Rock Road. They will join members of the Wichita Fire Department in collecting donations from passing motorists to help “Jerry’s Kids.”
“I hope all Wichitans will make a contribution to this worthy cause,” Mayor Brewer said.
MDA’s Fill-the-Boot is supported by the International Association of Fire Fighters and non-Union fire departments across North America. In 2008 Wichita Firefighters collected more than $46,000 for Jerry’s Kids and have established a goal of $50,000 for this year.
The tradition began in 1952, when a father in desperate need ran to an IAFF member George Graney’s Fire Engine company 1 in South Boston. The Boston IAFF Local 718 rounded up 20 firefighters and set in motion a door-to-door canister drive that raised $5,000. The IAFF has emerged as the single-largest sponsor of MDA, contributing more than $300 million since 1954.
