Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer was elected vice president of the League of Kansas Municipalities (LKM) TUESDAY morning in Topeka.
Mayor Brewer's nomination was submitted by the nominating committee of LKM Board of Directors and was overwhelmingly approved by the voting delegates at Thursday’s session.
The action came during the LKM annual conference at the Topeka Expocentre and Capitol Plaza Hotel Oct. 3-6.
As vice president, Mayor Brewer will serve a one-year term and be nominated for LKM president next year. The voting delegates also selected Overland Park Mayor Carl Gerlach as president. Mayor Gerlach succeeds Jack Rowlett, city council member from Paola.
In his application for the vice presidency, Mayor Brewer emphasized the importance of cooperative strategies to address the problems that face local communities, the state of Kansas and the nation as a whole.
“These troubled economic times demand a major leadership role from the League of Kansas Municipalities in solving the legislative and administrative challenges that face every Kansas community,” Mayor Brewer said. “I want to do my part to help find the solutions that improve the quality of life of every Kansan.”
Mayor Brewer also serves on the Board of Directors of the National League of Cities.
