Wichita Police will be handing out a different kind of “ticket” to help raise community awareness about a series of sports-related events, it was announced today by Police Chief Norman Williams.
An exhibition game between two NBA rivals, the Orlando Magic and the New Orleans Hornets, will be the high point of Wichita Sports Week that will benefit the American Cancer Society and the Salvation Army’s Biddy Basketball.
Between today and next Tuesday’s match-up between the Magic and the Hornets, Wichita Police officers will be monitoring drivers on Kellogg, U.S. Highway 54. When they spot a motorist who is driving safely and obeying traffic laws, that motorist will be pulled over and given two tickets to the Magic-Hornets game. “The purpose of handing out game tickets is to show citizens the City of Wichita stands ready to reward those who help make our community safer and more secure,” said Police Chief Norman Williams.
Wichita Sports Week, which is a joint promotion by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission and Sports Week Event, LLC, is a series of sports-related activities and programs designed to provide information, educational experiences and family-oriented entertainment.
"Sports Week Event is excited to join the Wichita Police Department in recognizing citizens who are driving safely," said William Sims, Sports Week Event founder and president. "A part of our mission is to engage youth and adults in activities that inspire achievement and enhance the quality of life."
