Sunday October 18th
The Mayor’s 5k Challenge is two days away. There is still time left to register to take part in the walk/run event. Register for the 5K Challenge at First Gear or at www.wichita.gov; registration cost is $15 for ages 15 and under; $20 for others; race-day registration cost is $25. Participants who finish before the Mayor will win an “I Beat The Mayor” T-shirt.
Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer also recently announced that profits will go to the No More Hungry Kids campaign, or www.nomorehungrykids.org, which is a local fundraiser to help the Kansas Food Bank provide weekend backpacks of food for children at local schools.
The Mayor’s 5K Challenge is a walk-or-run event associated with the annual Heart of America Marathon. The inaugural 5K Challenge starts at 9:45 a.m. in Old Town Plaza at 2nd and Mead. The course winds through Wichita’s downtown, passing by Old Town, Intrust Bank Arena, the WaterWalk and other destinations.
An awards ceremony begins at 10:45 a.m. in Old Town Square, where marathoners will also be finishing. The Mayor’s 5K Challenge medals will be given to the top three finishers in six age divisions.
The challenge is the kickoff of Mayor Brewer’s Community Health Initiative, which he announced during his 2009 State of the City Address.
