Statement by Wichita Mayor Carl Brewer in response to KCC rate consolidation ruling
NOTE: For further background, click here to read the Mayor’s public comment statement submitted to the KCC on Aug. 12.
The City of Wichita is disappointed in today’s rate consolidation decision by the Kansas Corporation Commission.
During the proceeding, we attempted to raise the awareness of the rate structure inequities that have penalized our region throughout the history of this debate.
As we noted in our intervener’s testimony to the KCC, the South territory served by Westar was penalized for 17 years because of an unfair rate structure.
Although we are disappointed in today’s decision to consolidate the rates between the Westar North and South territories, we are encouraged that the KCC will now conduct a separate proceeding to determine how that consolidation should be crafted.
As that process moves forward, the City of Wichita will continue to argue for an equitable resolution that acknowledges the issues we have raised throughout this long and contentious process.
