Final Spring Clean Up Event April 28 and 29

City and County residents wanting to clean up their yards or neighborhoods have one last chance to save $20 or more on landfill fees if they get the job done by April 29. On Saturday and Sunday, April 28 and 29, admission to Brooks Landfill will be free, for NON-COMMERCIAL VEHICLES (defined as non-business pickup trucks, cars, and trailers up to 14 feet). Hours will be 7:00 AM to 5 PM both days. Brooks Landfill will close on October 9, so the April event will be the last such opportunity.

Vehicles larger than a pickup truck, or trailers longer than 14 feet must have a pass from the City of Wichita or they will be charged admission to the landfill. Passes will be issued to vehicles and trailers used in a neighborhood or civic cleanup project. To obtain a pass, call the Wichita Public Works Department at 268-4497 during office hours, no later than April 24.

Yard waste and appliances will be accepted, along with miscellaneous junk and debris. Appliances will be recycled, and should be placed at the front or back of the load, so they can be separated on the way into or out of the landfill. This includes appliances which contain/ed refrigerant, such as air conditioners, refrigerators, etc.

Items which will not be accepted include tires and tire pieces, batteries, and liquid wastes such as paint, solvents, motor oil, bug sprays and weed killers. State law prohibits the disposal of tires in landfills. Tire dealers may accept old tires, for a fee.

Auto batteries and motor oil can be recycled; other hazardous wastes should be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Collection site at 2305 East 57th Street South, Tuesday through Saturday, from 9 AM to 1 PM. Details on what is accepted and how it should be packaged can be obtained by calling the Wichita-Sedgwick County Health Department at 268-8351.

All loads should be tied or covered to prevent littering on the way to the landfill. Special handling charges will be charged for non-crushable items larger than 3 feet, such as tree stumps, concrete, etc. For special handling charge information, contact Brooks Landfill at 722-0601.

The Landfill is located at 4100 North West Street (K-96 and West Street). For further information, contact the Department of Public Works at 268-4497.
