Today, City of Wichita crews and a large number of contracted forces began the massive task of picking up limbs from street right-of way and removing potentially hazardous hanging limbs, as a result of last week's ice storm. This is the beginning of a massive effort to clean up everything possible within the next seven days.

Crews are removing only ice storm debris that is located in City Right of Way or City property, as well as potentially hazardous hanging tree limbs in or above City Right of Way. They will NOT go on private property. "Our crews will complete as much of a sweep as possible through next Thursday, at which time the contractors will be released," said Larry Henry, City of Wichita Public Works Maintenance Engineer. "The City is in the process of procuring the services of an additional prime contractor to help perform the remaining clean-up work after this first phase of clean-up is complete, but City crews will also continue working throughout this time," he said.

It is important to get as much cleaned up as possible in one sweep of the City. Citizens in developed residential areas should make every effort to move any limbs to the curb as soon as possible, if they wish to have them picked up. However, the City will monitor routes and perform an additional sweep through some areas if necessary. Citizens are requested to help by keeping parked vehicles as far as possible from limb piles. Crews will not be able to remove piles located where a vehicle is parked blocking their way.

Please remember that TreeCycle locations have been closed as of 5 PM today, Friday, January 14, 2005. These sites have been inundated with tree limb debris from the storm so it was necessary to close them to avoid additional clean up in these unplanned locations. If a citizen wants to take limb debris, please take them to one of the free dump sites.

The City of Wichita & Sedgwick County FREE dump sites are:

  • Brooks Landfill Site: 4100 N. West Street
  • Sewage Treatment Plant: 2305 E. 57th Street South (57th St. & Hydraulic)
  • The Sedgwick County Yard located at 47th Street South and West Street
  • The Sedgwick County Yard located at 10530 E. 37th St. N (between Webb and Greenwich)
  • The Andale Yard, 5858 N. 247th Street West
  • The Clonmel Yard, 17500 West 71st Street South
  • The Kansas Coliseum, 1229 E. 85th Street (west of the salt dome)

These dump sites will be open this weekend and Monday through Friday from 8 AM to 4 PM. These sites will be open EVERY DAY until January 21 and then it will be evaluated to see if it needs to be open longer. These sites will be OPEN on Monday, January 17 even though City and County offices are closed in honor of Martin Luther King Day.

The City of Wichita has received calls that indicate some people are claiming to be City employees requesting to enter a citizen's home. The Wichita Police Department would like to remind you that no public utility would need to enter your home. Here are some tips to remember from the WPD:

  • If someone you did not call asks to come in your house, do not let them in. Ask to see an ID, look up the phone number and call the company to confirm their identity and need to be in your home.
  • Do not go outside with an estimator without locking the house. This prevents distraction burglaries.
  • Be cautious of contractors who solicit you.
  • Make sure contractors have a local phone number and address that you can confirm through the phone book.
  • Check the references on any contractor.
  • Get more than one written and signed estimate.
  • NEVER pay in advance.

Quick Clean-Up Facts:

  • Workforce: Approximately 300 City Employees, and Approximately 100 Contractor Employees
  • Equipment: Approximately 100 City pieces and 100 Contract pieces
  • Work schedule: 7 AM to 5 PM for the next 7 days including the weekend and holiday.
  • Work Plan: Start along Broadway, and work some crews moving east from Broadway, and others working west from Broadway.
