City Completes Ice Storm Tree Debris Clean-Up

Date: March 15, 2005

The second sweep of the City's limb clean-up has been completed following the January 4 ice storm. Crews have made two passes through the city, and have picked up all eligible limbs. All limbs remaining on private property or brought out to the curb after crews passed through must be disposed of by the citizens.

To assist citizens, Brooks Landfill will remain open for free limb disposal for citizens through Saturday, March 26. Landfill hours will be Monday through Saturday, 7:30 to 5:30. After March 26, all limbs or debris brought to Brooks Landfill will be subject to normal disposal charges.

Crews will continue to work on cutting down hazardous broken limbs and trees on public right of way and public properties. They will be picking up the trees after removal, but will no longer be picking up limbs brought to the street by citizens.

"The clean-up has required many City employees to work twelve-hour days, seven days a week," said Larry Henry, the City's Maintenance Engineer. "Completing this work as quickly as possible has been our top priority, and we are pleased to have it completed. We appreciate the patience and help of citizens as we cleaned up from this disastrous storm."

Henry said that many people have continued to bring limbs to the curb, even after the second pass. These limbs are not eligible to be picked up, and will need to be cleaned up by the citizens. In addition, many piles of twigs and small debris have been stacked and left in the right-of-way after crews removed the larger limbs. These piles of smaller debris are also the citizens' responsibility. Federal Emergency Management Administration rules do not allow for this type of debris to be eligible for reimbursed clean-up. Twigs and small branches can be disposed of in citizens' normal trash service, or hauled to the landfill.

Although the City is not aware of any neighborhoods that were not cleaned up, it is possible that a few were overlooked. If citizens feel their block or neighborhood was omitted, they may call the Limb Clean-up Hotline at 268-4070, and identify the address in question. A City supervisor will check these locations to determine if they were missed. Limbs will be picked up only if they were missed in the original passes. Limbs brought to the curb after the City was there will not be eligible.
