The City of Wichita’s Director of Law Gary Rebenstorf has been elected as the 2005-2006 President of the International Municipal Lawyers Association (IMLA). Rebenstorf also received the designation of Local Government Fellow for excellence in local government law from IMLA in 2001.

"We’re proud of Gary," City Manager George Kolb said. "This honor reflects the reputation he’s earned from his peers across the country. He embodies the direction our organization is headed as a high-performing organization."

The IMLA, formerly the National Institute of Municipal Law Officers, or NIMLO, has been an advocate and respected legal resource for local governments since 1935. IMLA serves as a clearinghouse of local law materials for more than 1,400 members across the United States and Canada. IMLA is dedicated to advancing excellence in the practice of local government law. Rebenstorf is the third Wichita City Attorney to lead the organization, joining former City Attorney Fred Aley, who served as NIMLO president from 1963 to 1964; and former City Attorney John Dekker, who served as NIMLO president from 1980-1981.

As City Attorney, Rebenstorf is responsible for planning, coordinating, supervising and directing the Law Department. He provides legal advice to the City Council and City Manager, as well as the departments, boards and agencies of the City. During his career with the City, he has worked on legal issues related to litigation, civil rights, employment, labor matters, administrative agency complaints and employee grievances.

A native Wichitan, he has been City Attorney for 14 years and a member of the city’s law department for 29 years. He received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Wichita State University in 1968 and a law degree from Oklahoma City University School of Law in 1976. He is a veteran and former intelligence specialist of the United States Navy.
