The Wichita Fire Department has opened its latest facility, Charles Shoots Fire Station #10. The official grand opening is planned in the near future.
The new station, located at 2950 E. 21st Street North, replaces the station at 17th and Grove that was built in 1949.
Fire Station #10 is a 9,000-square-feet, two-bay station. It houses five firefighters, a fire engine, a rescue squad and a hazardous materials engine.
The new station is named in honor of Charles Shoots, who, in 1894, became the department’s first African-American firefighter.
