In a survey of the 50 largest cities in the nation, Wichita proved to be a great value for water and wastewater rates in all categories.  The report just released measured the 50 city’s water and wastewater rates effective in August, 2005. The following shows Wichita’s results:

  • Wichita ranked the 5th least expensive city overall for water and wastewater rates when residential customers were using 7,500 gallons. (See figure 1 in attached survey.)

  • Wichita ranked 10th least expensive when residential customers were using 15,000 gallons. (Figure 2.)

  • Wichita ranked 3rd least expensive when commercial customers used 100,000 gallons. (Figure 3).

  • Wichita ranked 4th least expensive when commercial customers used 10 million gallons. (Figure 4).

According to Water & Sewer Department officials, the average citizen uses 7,500 gallons of water per month if they live in a home with a family of four. This would most likely be the winter rates and not include lawn irrigation (Figure 1). The larger amount of 15,000 gallons per month would be used by a family of four in the summer time when usage is higher, due to lawn irrigation and possibly a swimming pool use (Figure 2). The average business uses 100,000 gallons of water per month (Figure 3). Wichita’s largest employers would use 10 million gallons of water per month (Figure 4).

“This survey illustrates that Wichita’s Water and Sewer Department is achieving its mission to provide quality with extraordinary value, and we are proud of that,” said Water & Sewer Director David Warren.

The survey was compiled by Black & Veatch Corporation. The company gave the City of Wichita authorization to reuse this information to demonstrate the great value received from the City of Wichita Water & Sewer Department. Black & Veatch is considered a global expert with more than 100 years of experience and the company’s water projects have touched the lives of over one billion people.
