City of Wichita and Fairfax County (Va.) officials have agreed to wager in anticipation of the Friday evening NCAA Sweet 16 game between Wichita State and George Mason.

The City of Wichita is waging a case of Kansas steaks, which are being donated by Walnut Valley Packing. Approached by City Council member Carl Brewer, Walnut Valley Packing owners Dave Bowman and Bruce Carlselowey agreed to contribute the steaks though they expressed confidence the steaks won’t have to be delivered.

“We certainly believe in our Shockers and the fine quality of our meats " said Bowman of Walnut Valley Packing, located at 1000 S. Main Street in El Dorado.  The owners can be reached at  (316) 321-3595.

Fairfax County is wagering a case of Virginia wine, recommended by Gerald Connolly, chairman of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors.

“Chairman Connolly has assured me that the red wine selections will go well with his (Kansas) steak,” said Matthew Graham, Administrative Aide, with Fairfax County. “Virginia has been producing wine since Thomas Jefferson grew grapes, Fairfax County is offering an assortment of premium Virginia wines from a number of different award-winning Virginia vineyards such as Chrysalis Vineyards, Barboursville Vineyards, Tarara Winery and Thomas Jefferson's own Jefferson Vineyard. Good luck tonight.”

Wichita City Council members and Wichita City Manager George Kolb expressed confidence in the Shockers (26-8), which earlier this season loss a three-point contest to the visiting Patriots (25-7).

“Revenge will be sweet,” Kolb said. “We’re really proud of Wichita State. The friendly wager is an expression of our gratitude for how well the Shockers have represented the University and our City all season.”
