Wichita City Council Member Bob Martz passed in his Wichita home today, Jan. 17, 2007. Council Member Martz, who represented west Wichita, was elected to the seven-member City Council in 1999 and 2003. He was 64. He is survived by his wife, Sandy and his son, Todd.

Mrs. Martz has asked that reporters not contact the family. Reporters may contact City Council and City Manager George Kolb for comment.

Mayor Mayans said Council Member Martz’ advocacy for his growing west Wichita district will be missed on the Council. “Bob was a part of the Council family,” Mayor Mayans said. “He was an advocate for flood control, specifically at Cowskin Creek. He was passionate about economic development at New Market Square, the widening of 21st Street at Maize Road, the Kellogg expressway and annexation issues.”

Kolb remembered Council Member Martz’ devotion to his family, commitment to public service and passion for golf. One of Martz’ proudest accomplishments was the development of Auburn Hills public golf course, a crown jewel in the City’s Park and Recreation Department. “He and Sandy are very dear friends,” Kolb said. “We became close over the past couple of years and got a chance to know each other. I’m going to miss him.’

Council Member Martz was a retired financial consultant who served in the United States Navy. He was Vice Mayor from April 2002 to April 2003. He worked on many issues related to City government, particularly addressing flooding problems in west Wichita as well as across the city and throughout Sedgwick County. He was a leading member of a City-County floodplain management task force, formed to identify long-term solutions for flooding problems in communities throughout the county. Council Member Martz was also involved with the National League of Cities (NLC) as a member of the Human Development Committee.

He was born in Quinter, where he graduated from high school in 1960. He earned a bachelor’s of science degree in physical education degree from Fort Hays State in 1965 and a master’s of science business administration degree from Fort Hays State in 1971.
