At today’s meeting of the Wichita Public Library Board of Directors, a preferred location for a new Central Library received unanimous recommendation. The announcement comes as the result of several months of effort on the part of the Library Board’s Planning and Facilities Committee to identify potential properties in the downtown core that meet the Library’s needs.
The site, commonly referred to as the former Watkins Steel plant, is at the southwest corner of West Second Street and McLean Boulevard. “We are pleased to have identified this location that keeps us close to users in the core of Wichita as well as the cultural venues along the river corridor,” stated Rodger Woods, president of the Library Board of Directors. “The location not only meets a new central location’s requirements as detailed in our Master Plan, but offers many additional benefits to the Library and its customers.”
The Library Board’s recommendation of this site will be forwarded to the City Council for consideration in their workshop on October 23.
