The Wichita City Council recognized four businesses on Tuesday for helping sustain the success of the City of Wichita’s Emerging and Disadvantaged Business Program.
Awards of Recognition were presented to two Emerging Business Enterprises (EBE) and two Prime Contractors that have participated in the City’s purchasing process.

The EBEs, His & Hers Cleaning and Unruh Excavating, was awarded contracts totaling more than $662,700 from July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2007. His & Hers Cleaning, a new vendor, was recently awarded a first-time janitorial contract for the City’s branch libraries.

The Prime Contractors, Mies Construction, Inc., and Wildcat Construction Co., have consistently utilized EBE’s as sub-contractors. They have delivered sub-contract work totaling more than $11.5 million to minority-owned, women-owned and other emerging and disadvantaged vendors from July 1, 2006 thru June 30, 2007.

“The success of the program stems from a collaboration of City staff, EBE vendors, prime contractors and sub-contractors working together,” Mayor Carl Brewer said.

The City Council approved the “Emerging and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise Program in May 2005. The program is designed to increase participation of Emerging and Disadvantaged Businesses in the City’s purchasing process and to improve their efforts to provide services. EBE’s successes are measured by the amount of dollars spent and the number of new EBE’s participating in the purchasing process, particularly small, minority-owned and women-owned vendors, registering with the City.

EBE participation continues to increase. More prime contractors are cooperating in utilizing EBE’s in their sub-contracting opportunities and in reporting the information.

During the program’s first year of operation in 2006, two Prime Contractors (Cornejo & Sons and Dondlinger Construction) and two EBEs (Parga Construction and DuBois Consultants, Inc.) were recognized for helping make the program a success.
