City Snow and Ice Teams Ready to Respond

Date: March 27, 2009
Contact: Communications Team
Phone: (316) 268-4351

City snow and ice crews are poised to respond to the snow forecast for today and overnight (Friday and Saturday). Employees are fueling equipment, mounting plows, and loading trucks with salt and sand in preparation for the storm. Streets are not being pretreated with brine, because the forecast included rain before snow, which would wash away the brine.

Three 8-hour shifts of 60 dump trucks with plows and eight graders have been scheduled, starting at 8 a.m. this morning and through the weekend if needed. Equipment will focus on designated snow routes, primarily the major arterial streets (Central, 21st Street, Rock Road, Tyler, Kellogg, etc.)

A special phone number has been established for residents to report streets that are impassable due to drifting. If there is a foot of snow in a driveway and a foot in the street, please do not call this number; but if wind has caused drifts significantly higher than the amount in your driveway, call 303-8770 to report this condition.

However, side streets and residential streets will not be plowed until after the designated snow routes are passable. Also, plows will only clear the center of the street – not driveways. Residents will have to clear their own driveways.
