Purchasing exists to obtain the greatest value for each dollar spent by the City of Wichita in the procurement of commodities and services for the various departments we represent.

The City of Wichita recognizes the importance of participation by everyone to achieve this objective. This web site was developed to assist vendors in the bidding process and to provide a better way of doing business with the City.​​​

Our job is to see that each City department is supplied with the goods or services it needs quickly, efficiently, and economically. We cannot do this without the active participation and cooperation of suppliers. We want to work with you. We recognize that neither of us can be successful without the other.

If you encounter problems with a bid, contact us. We will do everything in our power to resolve the problem in the fairest possible manner. We feel that it is important to develop good relationships with vendors and that good relationships with potential vendors are invaluable.

Individuals wishing to meet personally with a buyer are welcome and encouraged to contact the Purchasing Office to arrange an appointment.​ Our business hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Bid Schedules

All formal bids must be received by the Purchasing Office prior to the time and date set for the opening of bids. All bids are time stamped when received, and late bids will be rejected and remain unopened.

Bid opening takes place on Fridays at 10am on the first floor in the boardroom unless there is no council meeting scheduled.

​Board of Bids and C​​ontracts

The Board of Bids and Contracts was established by City ordinance in 1956 as an advisory board of the City Commission. Since its inception, the development of the Board of Bids and Contracts has focused a large portion of the responsibility for purchases where the statutory limitation applies and formal bid procedures are followed. It is, therefore, necessary to thoroughly examine the policies and procedures of the Board of Bids and Contracts before a complete understanding of the purchasing process of the City of Wichita can be achieved.


The Board is composed of:

  • City Manager, Chairman
  • Director of Public Works, Vice Chair
  • Director of Finance
  • City Attorney
  • Budget Officer
  • or duly appointed representatives

The duties and jurisdiction of the Board is set forth by ordinance. The Board is empowered to review all bids for public improvements (streets, sewers, etc.) and bids on all purchases, and forwards their recommendations to the City Council for final approval. In carrying out their responsibilities, the Board has developed policies which aid in the determination of awarding purchase contracts.

Meeting Sc​​hedule

The Board meets every Monday at 10am in the Finance Conference Room on the 12th floor of City Hall. Meetings are open to the public.
