The Wichita Public Library’s Advanced Learning Library, the newest building in the City’s seven-location library system, has been selected as an honorable mention for Library Journal’s “New Landmark Libraries.”
Each year, Library Journal, an American trade publication for libraries, selects libraries that have completed new construction, renovation or building expansion projects that creatively and effectively meet today’s challenges and create tomorrow’s opportunities for library users.
“We’re honored to receive this recognition from the Library Journal,” said Cynthia Berner, Director of Libraries for the City of Wichita. “Several organizations played critical roles in making the Advanced Learning Library come to life, and their work doesn’t go unnoticed.”
The New Landmark Libraries awards celebrate projects that demonstrate excellence in community engagement in design, sustainability, functionality, innovation and beauty and delight. Public libraries that completed new construction, expansion or renovation between January 2016 and March 1, 2019 were eligible for nomination. Six buildings were selected as award winners, and four were selected as honorable mentions. One major component of the Advanced Learning Library is the use of technology, both in its infrastructure and through programming and service opportunities.
“The public library of today looks completely different than the public library of yesterday,” Berner said. “Technology plays a critical role in our daily lives, and we want to make sure we’re playing our part in providing digital skills training to residents.”
GLMV Architecture served as the lead architecture firm for the project. Other firms included: H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture, The Sextant Group (technology), Sasaki Associates (urban planning), Margaret Sullivan Studio (interior design) and HBM Architects (programming).
The Advanced Learning Library is located at 711 W. 2nd St., Wichita. The Library is open 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday-Saturday and 1-5 p.m. Sunday.
